Winter Solstice

On Sunday 21 December we reach that deep tipping point of the year, the place where the nights have stretched as far as they can, and then the light begins, very slowly, to grow again. The days will still feel short for a while, but something subtle shifts. The wheel turns, even if we cannot quite feel it yet.

To celebrate the winter solstice, perhaps light candles or lanterns to focus our welcome to the return of the sun - an increased light in the darkness after the winter months. You could set an intention for the coming year or write a list of things you are grateful for. Enjoy some winter walks and notice the world in its wintery quiet state and prepare for the growing season ahead. Choose activities that resonate to you - finding peace in this season.

Below is a list of ideas to celebrate the Winter Solstice and mark the return of the sun,
honouring the ever-turning wheel of the year and giving thanks for the passing of another season:

Light candles or a fire, connecting to historical celebrations of survival throughout the darkest months. An ancient tradition that symbolises the sun's return, as well as the banishing of darkness and welcoming blessings of the new year, is to burn a yule log. Originating in Pagan roots, the practice stems from Germanic and Scandinavian winter solstice festival rituals where large logs were burned to coax the sun back and conquer darkness. It reminds us to reflect on our past and present experiences.

Journaling is a great way to reflect on past and present experiences, as well as to set intentions for the coming year. Gratitude journaling is very powerful, letting you honour all that is good in your life, acknowledging moments of great joy and connection. Take some time to make a list of things that you are grateful for and spend some time reflecting on them.

Self-Care – Winter Solstice is a perfect time to enjoy some self-care rituals you can orchestrate for yourself, be it a nourishing meal you create for yourself or loved ones, some meditation or calming music to soothe your nervous system or a warm bubble bath with some inviting essential oils and a great book! It’s all about slowing down and re-booting, ready for the new season. You are so worth it!!

One of the most powerful, easily accessible and totally free ways to honour the Solstice is to connect with nature. Even a few minutes outside bathing your senses in the beauty of the winter landscape, allowing the winter sunshine to warm your face. This practice can lift your mood, boost your energy and vitamin D levels. Winter Solstice is an invitation to align with the Earth’s natural rhythms and find peace it its beauty and splendour.

May you find peace in the promise of the solstice night. That each day forward is blessed with more light.
