Agility - dictionary definition: the ability to move your body quickly and easily.

Last week I switched the TV on and the dog agility from Crufts was showing. I watched the rescue dogs flying round with precision, speed and waggy tails and this got me thinking about the word agility. Maybe not a word you associate with Hatha yoga.

But when you think about it, in everyday life agility is often demanded of the body and the mind. Spiritual agility is achieved when we are able to maintain inner peace, and adapt to life’s challenges. Beyond its reputation for improving flexibility alone, yoga can be a catalyst to increasing our agility creating a harmonious balance between the body and mindfulness.

The synchronisation of breath and movement in asana practice will increase our flexibility, and strength. The deliberate controlling of movement with breath quietly highlighting the co ordination and present moment awareness required to achieve this.

So perhaps not the dictionary definition of agility but the profound connection between mind and body it encourages throughout our yoga practises on and off the yoga mat.

This week we will explore agility within our yoga practise through asana, pranayama and a guided body scan to sooth our nervous system and perhaps fine tuning our ability to drop into this moment.
