The medicine of nature.

As spring fully envelops us with lighter days, the occasional teaser of warmer sunshine, birds song and luscious new growth of the plants and trees. It really is a time that’s so special to be out in nature.

Many of us spend extended periods of time constantly rushing around and in front of screens which can cause disconnect from the natural environments around us. The mental health charity Mind states being outside in green spaces can significantly improve our mental health. Scientist are discovering the part of our brain that’s responsible for negative thoughts the subgenual prefrontal cortex has been shown to quieten when we connect with the natural world.

Here are a few ideas to connect with nature:

Enjoy a picnic - our sense of smell and taste sharpen outside.

Go for a walk - technology free! Enjoy all the sights and sounds around you.

Grounding - walking barefoot on the grass or sand or earth. The body absorbs electrons from the earth. Rest on the ground - maybe enjoy some cloud or stargazing.

Swim in natural bodies of water. Invigorating at anytime in the UK.

Practise meditation, yoga or journaling outside, notice the nuance of change this can create to your overall feelings physically, mentally and spiritually.

Sit with a tree and enjoy the energy exchange and connection.

“The goal of yoga is to realise the unity of the individual soul with the universal soul, which is reflected in all of nature” B K S Iyenger
